FEVER WITH CHEMO: FEVER WITH CHEMO. It can be a side effect of the chemo or a secondary infection. You need an exam/LABS/UAC&amp;S and a CXR. Seek prompt follow up with your doctor. If symptoms worsen or fever &gt;101, seek ER EVALUATION.

No idea: This white count is not really elevated. The elevated segs suggest a bacterial infection. Have the doctor give you more information. Cannot tell what is the infection from your hx.

Not unusual: Dental infections are usually very low grade infections and the body is able to fight them for a good while. However, left unchecked, a dental infection can cause a jump in white cell counts and in basal body temperature. It is so easy to keep dental infections in check just by visiting a dentist and having regular check ups.

It Can: If the infection is confined to the hard surfaces of the tooth, there is no blood component.  However, if the infection encompasses the gums, nerve, or other vascular component of the mouth, then an increased white blood cell count is definitely probable, as it would be in any other infection.  Many times patient's say "it doesn't hurt, why treat it?"  this is a perfect reason why it is necessary!

Confined to the gut: Despite popular wisdom, the white blood cells that fight bacteria often are not increased in the blood unless the infection is severe and involves much of the body, or they are actually multiplying in the bloodstream. I understand you are recovering from a c. Difficile diarrhea and you can rest assured many of your friendly white cells are in your gut helping fight these nasty bacteria.

You make more: White blood cells (WBCs) are the soldiers in your bloodstream who fight infections for you. Suppose you have a bacterial infection. One thing your WBCs do is start killing bacteria. At the same time, they also send signals for your bone marrow to make more WBCs. It is this "calling for more troops" that causes you to make more WBCs which makes your WBC count go up.

To monitor response!: Wbc count, preferably w/ differential is an excellent way to monitor treatment response to antibiotics, or other treatments!
