Prednisone for pain: Prednisone is a temporary solution to help with an acute flare of your back pain.  Some people who have herniated disk do not have pain and others have it chronically.  When there is a flare or a worsening of pain, this can help but will not permanently make the pain go away.

Potentially: A Medrol (methylprednisolone) dose pack is basically a regimen of oral steroids, usually taken for anywhere from a 6-15 day course.  Steroids are very potent anti-inflammatories and so can help inflammatory conditions such as a radiculopathy secondary to a herniated disc.  The effectiveness, and also the time they last vary tremendously.  Steroids can cause multiple, severe side effects but usually more in chronic use.

Watch Blood Pressure: Yes it is generally safe, just watch your blood pressure.  Injectable testosterone would carry a higher risk of increase blood pressure.  Topical gels should not.

Possibly: the prednisone may affect your cycle slightly, with possible increased bleeding. This is a temporary side effect.

: Please consider that pneumonia can be fatal, so treating it properly is very important. Keep a close eye on your blood pressure and sugar levels since some of these medications may cause them to rise. You and your doctor may want to adjust your blood pressure and diabetes medications if necessary.  I hope you feel better soon.

See details: It depends on the severity of the flares. A short course such as a dosepack may not help at all. If it helps you should see benefit in the first 2-3 days.
