NOT NECESSARILY: It depends upon why you are seeing the doctor and what issues the doctor is focusing on.  These tests must be ordered individually.  If you are concerned that you may have been exposed to an std go and ask to be tested.  Hope they are all negative.

Pretty much: Additionally, local (oral) swabs for relevant infections-of-risk (e.g. HSV/Herpes, Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, etc...) based on the specific history and locality can be done as well.

Accepted Answer

Not quite: Urine testing (or vaginal swab) checks for gonorrhea and chlamydia, and blood tests are for syphilis, HIV, and sometimes herpes (HSV) and hepatitis B (depending on risks, symptoms, etc). Testing for HPV (with pap smear), trichomonas, and other vaginal infections requires pelvic exam.  By the way, STD and STI are the same thing; there is no difference in meaning between the two abbreviations.

can patients ask for a copy of pap, std, and blood work results for their own personal records even if test were normal?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely : You are entitled by law to a copy of your medical records including all test results. Though very similar, every state and every office has their particular rules and procedures in handling requests for medical records and they have the right to charge you, if so desired, a fee for making copies (50-75 cents per page customary). I feel it is a good idea for patients to keep copies of test results.

Accepted Answer

No: It all depends on the whole picture... the risk factors, the story, the symptoms, and the exam. For example, a blood test can show that a person has had herpes, but that could have been an outbreak on the hand. A doctor is needed to decide IF blood tests are needed, and WHICH tests to order.

if i went to the hospital because i was very ill without knowing the cause and they did blood work would they usually test for an std?

Accepted Answer

Not necessarily: This depends on the clinical picture of "very ill"  The most pertinent information regarding std's is carried out with a pelvic exam. Don't forget that your medical record is YOUR record.  You can get a copy of this from the hospital with a request.   If you have symptoms persisting, then I would followup as an outpatient with a visit to address them.

3 passed pcr urine tests for all std and blood work but still get a sensation when i get the urge to pee? what else could this be? my doc don't know

Accepted Answer

Ureaplasma/mycoplasm: Ureaplasma or mycoplasma can cause the symptoms you are experiencing but are not a part of the normal STD panel.  Ask your doctor to check for this.  Requires special medium to grown and detect.

took a uti test and tested positive for  leukocytes but negative for nitrates..took a std test recently and was negative and blood work was negative..it burns after i pee once in awhile and penis itch?

Urethritis/Chlamydia: Leukocytes mean that there is inflammatory process.Positive nitrite test is positive when there is urinary infection due to gram negative bacteria.
Urine positive for Leukocytes and neg nitrite in men can be due to Chlamydia infection in urethra
It is important to establish the diagnosis as your sexual partner also needs to be treated with antibiotics.

how long after exposure can you see in blood test for stds?

Accepted Answer

STD : It depends on the std. Syphilis would be revealing about a month after exposure. Hiv can be detected as early as 10-14 days by measuring the HIV virus directly. Hepatitis b/c may take up to 6 months to be detected but as early as 60 days. Gonorrhea/chlamydia are not detected in the blood. Herpes is often detected incidentally given the fact primary exposure often remains unknown.

what happens if i'm getting a blood test for stds can they tell if i smoke cigarettes?

Accepted Answer

Maybe,maybe not: They will not find it in the test.However, most smokers will have a lingering tobacco smell that is an easy  pickup in close quarters.
