You haven't said why: your husband was taking the licorice root. What did he think he was treating? If he has something serious he may be masking the problem rather than treating it. I suggest he make an appointment with a health care professional for a thorough evaluation. Pain is NEVER a good sign even when it goes away quickly and often says there is something bad happening in the body.

Can hurt like labor: Yes, but not always.  The pain can be excruciating, unremitting, described by some as worst than labor pain.  The larger then stone the more pain generally speaking.  If the stone moves more likely to cause pain.  Some have very large stones in their kidneys which is only noted incidentally on an unrelated imaging study, yet they have no symptoms at all.

Not sure: Kidneys hurt only in limited number of conditions . Most common when there is an infection called pyelonephritis . They can also hurt if you have a stone or sand . Not sure if there is any relation  to not 'pooping ' unless there is a different condition that is not kidneys.
