We need to talk: As a pathologist, I would not accept this level as indicating codeine use. These assays generate background noise and low levels are to be expected when there&#x27;s been no drug ingestion. This is about a sixth of 300 ng/mL which is a common cutoff for codeine. The lab&#x27;s pathologist should agree or risk liability. I believe you&#x27;re clean. If someone else doesn&#x27;t, get a lawyer.

unlikely: If you only ingested what you have said, it is likely that your urine test will have dropped below the cutoff levels and be reported negative.  This is no guarantee however and if the medication was obtained over the counter without prescription in a foreign country, the medical review officer will likely not accept that as medical justification and be required to report that as a positive test.

Yes: Drugs tests look for 2 essential chemicals when they look for opiates - Codeine and morphine, which are similar compounds and they are both converted into each other. Hydrocodone is metabolized into Codeine which is then transformed by acetylation to morphine. These are the final common pathway products for most, but not all, opiates. Oxycodone produces relatively little, is has separate test.

Depends on screen: They both show up as opioids on a basic drug screen.  They can be identified separately on more complex (accurate) tests

i take a drug test weekly because i am on suboxone.   i come up positive for codeine every now and then.   i have not taken any other substance. help?

Accepted Answer

Codeine is an opiate: and therefore is tested for in many drug screens.  Suboxone is a combination of buprenorphine, an opiod medication, and naloxone an opiod/narcotic reverser. Buprenorphine is metabolized differently from methadone, heroin, etc. and if you are ONLY taking suboxone, the opiate test should be negative. So I can't explain your results. Discuss with your suboxone provider:)

Codeine: If you have a valid prescription this is not a concern. It usually lasts 3 - 5 days.

YES: Hydrocodone is a particularly strong version of codeine. 
You can never pass a drug screen while taking this medicine.
