Studies have shown: That the differential diagnosis of heartburn symptoms is quite broad, but according to Dr. Harmon and others in Therapeutic Advances in Gastroenterology,  there are five major causes:
Medications, functional dyspepsia, GERD, peptic ulcer disease, and cancer.

i've read gerd/heartburn is often caused by low stomach acid and not too much. is this true or more of a holistic/natural type point of view?

Accepted Answer

Not true: GERD is caused by contents in the stomach coming up through the esophagus, which in turn has a poorly understood cause. We think it is probably due to too many random openings of the valve. Certain medications can also cause the valve to open, as can stress, obesity, &amp; problems with the stomach emptying to name a few. Hope this helps!

i am experiencing  acid reflux and heartburn (gerd). i tend to get this a lot after swallowing a pill. what could cause this?

GERD: Gerd (movement of stomach contents into esophagus) can result from: 1) inappropriate relaxation of lower esophageal sphincter, gastroparesis (sluggish stomach emptying, partial gastric outlet obstruction), ineffective esophageal peristalsis, inadequate salivary production. Limit consumption of: caffeine &amp; fizzy drinks, dietary fats, tomato products, chocolate, tobacco, alcohol, bedtime snacks.

Spasms: The acid reflux can cause the muscles of the esophagus to spasm and cause a temporary blockage or narrowing.

currently taking 40mg omeprazole 4 gerd, recently, have excessive acid (ea) which results in severe heartburn even with ppi. what can causes for ea b?

Timing : How are you taking the omeprazole? It should be taken on an empty stomach with nothing to eat or drink for at least 30 minutes after. If you aren't taking it this way that can reduce to the effectiveness. Otherwise, you may need to see your doctor or a gastroenterologist.

Gastritis: Gastritis could very well be what is going on. Still other possibilities especially with the diarrhea. If you have any additional systemic symptoms (fever, etc) I would see a doc/urgent care.

i have trouble eating enriched flour and enriched rice. organic flour & rice, that has not been enriched doesn't cause heartburn (gerd). is there a diagnosis or know disease for this. niacin causes problems in enriched foods?

: Apparently you're intolerant of some or one of the nutrients which are added after processing those foods. Actually you're better off eating the nonprocessed products anyway.

Not likely: that a small hiatal hernia can cause breathing problems.  Have your doctor investigate other causes of your symptoms.

can plavix cause persistent heartburn in a person with stroke, heart atrack and gerd treated with protonix (pantoprazole)?

Accepted Answer

Unlikely: Plavix (clopidogrel) does not cause such acidity symptoms but acid refux can be the reason for your symptoms.
