will bactrim ds treat chlamydia at all? i know azithromiacin is the primary choice, but i am already taking bactrim.

: Bactrim has weak efect against chlamydia -- you should not rely on it for cure. However, the combination of bactrim plus azithromycin (1 gram, single dose) for sure will be effective. (Is your chlamydial infecion proved? It would be very unlikely to have a positive test result while taking bactrim.)

i was prescribed bactrim ds for a uti but suspect it is actually chlamydia. will a naat test work, or would it be masked by taking bactrim? in either case, should i request another drug like azithromycin?

: The sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim should not interfere with the nuclei acid testing. I’m curious as to what makes you think it is caused by chlamydia...If you DO, indeed, have a U. T. I., you should probably finish the Bactria DS. A single 1 gram dose of azithromycin is still the recommended treatment for uncomplicated chlamydia urethritis—and is a LOT cheaper than an NAAT chlamydia test...

No: This would not be adequate treatment for chlamydia.Erythromycin like drugs, tetracyclines and occasionally the floxins (ofloxacin) are used to treat this family of germs.

Accepted Answer

: Chlamydia symptoms vary in patients with some having variable or no symptoms. Resistance to Bactrim and other sulfa based drugs is known. It would not be my first choice for treatment. The only way to document clearing of this problem is through repeat testing.

Probably not: Sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (Bactrim) can suppress chlamydia, so it could lead to a false negative test result. However, 2 days is too soon. Even with the most effective antibiotics against chlamydia (e.g., doxycycline, azithromycin) it usually takes a few days for DNA tests (like PCR) to become negative. So your result probably is reliable. But if in doubt, discuss with the doctor or clinic.

i started taking bactrim at 8pm tuesday and took an hiv, syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia test at 4 pm on wednesday. my tests just came back negative, could bactrim have affected the results?

: Bactrim is entirely ineffective against syphilis and cannot affect that result, no matter how much of the drug or how long you take it. It might or might not cure gonorrhea or chlamydia, but not that quickly. Your test results are completely reliable.

Impossible to tell: If you are concerned that you have a chlamydial vaginal infection you should see your physician to give a urine specimen to specifically diagnose chlamydia. Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) will not adequately treat a chlamydial infection
