Not a good idea: Endogenous nitric oxide (NO) is involved in the pathogenesis of asthma and can lead to inflammation and contraction of the airways.  NO is actually produced by the metabolism of L-arginine. Which med?: Need to know which medications you have tried and for how long?  First we need to make sure that you indeed have asthma instead of other entities such as  vocal cord dysfunction. We need to know if there are other conditions such as GERD or sinusitis. Consider consulting with an allergist.

No: Pro air does not treat the underlying inflammation of asthma. It is meant as a rescue medicine for relief of acute symptoms . If someone uses pro air more than twice a week, they need to be on preventive inhalers containing inhaled corticosteroids with or without a long acting bronchodilator.

Low dose inh steroid: Low dose inhaled corticosteroids are very safe; if you brush your teeth afterwards there may be no side effects.

Probably not: Cold air is a tenacious trigger for asthma - there really is no way to treat it with medications. The only way to get some relief is to cover your mouth and nose with a scarf of cold weather mask. These trap the moisture from your breath, which then warms and humidifies the cold, dry air that you next inhale. Trying to inhale through the nose does the same thing, but is difficult during exertion.

Patients with cough-variant asthma, exercise-induced asthma, or regular asthma also use steroid inhalers (such as Flovent) to reduce swelling, mucus, and "sensitivity" in the airways. Singulair is an another medication that can be used.
