can being on plavix & aspirin make menstrual cramps more painful? i was diagnosed w/endometriosis years ago &already had painful cramps (before blood thinners).today is day 4 of terrible cramps (no bleeding today) after 2 days heaving bleeding

Menstrual cramps: I assume your menstrual cramps are due to your endometriosis and wonder about blockage of fallopian tubes as a cause of severe cramping. Plavix and aspirin would accentuate bleeding but not cramps &amp; taking NSAIDs like ibuprofen or naproxen is not recommended when your on these medications. Your gynecologist could advise you further and suggest using heat &amp; prescription pain relieving medications.

how to differeniate between implantation and menstrual bleeding especially if the bleeding came 5 days later than period, took levonorgestrel after the sex by 2 days. the bleeding was few on the 1st day &increased on 2nd &3rd day and lasted for 5 day?

About implantation..: Only after a positive pregnancy test can tell a woman that PRIOR spotting was actually implantation bleeding. It can be hard to tell if a woman is pregnant because some of the symptoms seen in early pregnancy can also happen in nonpregnant women. A urine pregnancy test gives a reliable result by 3 weeks after sex (3 weeks after when conception might have occurred) or 1 week after missing a period.

Aspirin: A dose of 325 mg of Aspirin will not affect any implantation bleeding.

Accepted Answer

Yes: We recommend you stop Aspirin in pregnancy. It can increase risks of bleeding but also can interfere with the circulation system of the baby.  You can safely use tylenol (acetaminophen) for pain if need to.

what pain reliever is safe to use with diabetic retinopathy? i know aspirin can increase bleeding risk, so i assume it wouldn't be safe for someone with diabetic retinopathy. are other nsaid's ok?

Diabetic : Diabetic retinopathy comes in many forms.  In general, I do not advise stopping of nsaids or Aspirin in patients with diabetic retinopathy (some of these patients have underlying cardiac disease - an Aspirin daily is beneficial in these patients for systemic health).  If someone has proliferative diabetic retinopathy, use of nsaids or Aspirin could theoretically increase the size of a bleed should it occur.  Someone with proliferative diabetic retinopathy should be followed closely and treatment by laser can preserve vision in these patients.

Medical evaluation: It is very important for you to see your gynecologist if you have consistently bled for a year as that can lead to anemia.

See below: This is not common, but may be due to the relaxation of your uterus at bedrest allowing easier and greater flow, whereas activity may be causing contractile forces to retain your menses.

Time to see GYN MD: t is now time to see a GYN MD at your earliest convenience and obtain a pap smear and begin the process of finding out why the periods are painful. There are several causes for the same, but the number one diagnosis is usually Endometriosis after documentation by the MD. Oral contraceptive Rx is usually a place to bring immediate pain relief.
