i get uti's almost twice a month. i wad put on an antibiotic to take after sex by my urologyst. will this effect my yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) birth control?

Maybe: Yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) has many different interactions with a large number of medications including some antibiotics.There is growing concern about Yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) & similar oral contraceptives about an increased risk of blood clots.Always update your doctor who prescribes Yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) of any new medication you are taking & speak with your pharmacist 1st.Most antibiotics appear ok with Yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) except some antibiotics for virus, fungus & hiv.

Antibiotics & BCP: Nope.  You will have to have a partner wear a condom for now. The antibiotics may lessen the birth control's efficacy.

: The Antibiotic may diminish the therapeutic effect of the Estrogen component in Lo Estrin, but that effect is very minor. Additionally it will be also short term, if at all, if the antibiotic course is only several days

Rare problem: The whole business about antibiotics interfering with hormonal contraceptives (pills, inserts, etc) is largely an urban myth. It can happen, but is very rare. Neither of these antibiotics taken as usual (a few days to a couple of weeks) is likely to be a problem, I wouldn't worry about it. But if you're nervous, also use condoms while taking them and for a week after the last dose.

are there any birth control pills available to treat pcos that are low in estrogen/estrogen-free? i have migraines and am currently on yaz, and want to reduce my stroke risk. i'm in college and the obgyn clinic here on campus  is very unhelpful.

Hmmm...: Short answer is yes: there are low-estrogen oral contraceptives. Not sure you'd want to do that, though. First, the ovarian cysts can only be controlled if ovulation is stopped, and this requires taking estrogen to inhibit pituitary FSH release. Without estrogen the cysts might rage out of control. This estrogen must (I believe) be balanced with progesterone and testosterone, EVEN in PCOS patients

Depends: The pill is a potent medication that replicates hormones made by the normal female. There are some women whose family or personal medical history make the use of some forms of combination hormonal  birth control risky. This is something best decided during a thorough evaluation by the doc. For most others it is a valuable &amp;  safe form of BC.

No interaction w Yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol): As per LexiComp and ePocrates, there is no interaction between Yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) and chlorpheniramine maleate (an antihistamine).  Likewise, there is no interaction between Yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) and chlorpheniramine with the decongestants ephedrine or pseudoephedrine or phenylephrine,  with the cough suppressant dextromethorphan, with the expectorant guaifenesine, or with acetaminophen.

No: Panadol (acetaminophen) does not affect the effectiveness of Yaz. Neither does ibuprofen or other NSAIDS.

GERD and BCP's: Birth control pills (including "YAZ") contain less estrogen and progesterone than a normal cycle (i.e., without bcp's), and the occurrence of GERD is related to increased acid production and regurgitation of the acid into the throat, and is related to stress, anxiety, etc., and not caused by estrogen/progesterone in any form.
