Dysmenorrhea: Abdominal and/or low back pain with menstrual cycle is very common and can be disabling. Talk to your doctor about using oral contraceptive that will resolve this problem.

Helping with period: pain: try ibuprofen (Advil/Motrin), starting 1-2 days before your period every 6-8 hours. Making your period lighter is not as easy. Both issues may be helped with hormonal treatment, i.e. birth control pill. Please see you primary care doctor or your gynecologist to discuss this further.

Various medications: Cramping is caused by contractions of the muscle of the uterine wall and these contractions are caused by the release of a chemicals called prostaglandins.  These chemicals are released with the period. Nsaids are mediations that can prevent the production of prostaglandins. Ibuprofen, Naproxen and even Aspirin are examples. They work best if you start them before the pain starts.

Perimenopause: This is a "state of being" that takes a few months to determine.  You may just have an irregular period and then it will go back to normal.  Or you may (likely) be going down the perimenopause path.  Often periods get closer together and then they start dropping out.  You will sometimes get hot flashes, difficulty sleeping, night sweats, moodiness.  Keep a diary to know exactly what is going on
