Because some severely depressed patients may be thinking about suicide, doctors will ask about this as well. Doctors will either offer treatment [medication(s) and/or psychotherapy] or refer a depressed patient to another qualified provider. Depression is readily treatable.

Many possibilities: Start with a teen or child with depression (there are many degrees of depression). If you do nothing, the patient suffers her depression and gets well, or suffers depression and has it on and off for years, or suffers depression and gets well but gets depressed again many years later. If she gets early treatment, she suffers less, but can still get symptoms off and on, or a recurrence years later.

Excellent : Excellent points by dr. Kardener. One other issue is that chronic pain and chronic are often intertwined. When one gets worse the other often does as well. He might also wish to consider use of medical acupuncture to assist with his chronic pain. Take care.

Inaccurate: Depressed people I have known are usually just as anxious -- if not more so -- as others about risky surgeries.  Depression changes your outlook so that one overemphasizes possible negative outcomes, and under-recognizes possible benefits.  If a patient asked for a surgery, s/he would still need evaluation to see what's wrong -- including to see if less invasive treatments are possible first.

Depression: It is important to know if this person is being effectively for his/her depression.  Severe depression can lead to social withdrawal and little interest in talking.  It can ultimately lead to a person not talking. Those experiencing depression are really suffering so it is very important to treat with antidepressant medication as well as love and support
