Can happen: These can happen with all birth control pills, you may switch to a non-hormone method, or at least, a low hormone method (iuds, implants, mini-pills, etc.).

Spotting on bcp's: "Spotting" is caused by a decrease in estrogen , and irregular times of taking the low dose pills now being used will result in spotting.  To prevent this, a definite time in the evening of taking the pill will prevent this, but in some cases, the pill dose will need a small increase. If this occurs, changing the pill may prevent "spotting".

Melasma: No one really seems to know what causes melasma. It seems to be a combination of the sun,  hormones and a predisposition. You should see a dermatologist. It can be treated with prescription bleaching creams and certain sunscreens. Treatment takes months and is not always successful.

GYN evaluation: You should get a prgnancy test ,female hormones, thyroid hormones, blood sugar, HgbA1c,PAP a nd pelvic exam.

Ans: Yes it is. The birth control alters the hormones. The uterine wall still needs to thin. But no ovulation. So you can get a full period or spotty blessing on and off

Give it time: Check a pregnancy test and if negative give it some time. Most likely you will have a cycle at the end of the next pack of birth control.

Yes: Women with pcos do not generally ovulate and have elevated baseline estrogen levels.  As a result, they get thickened lining of the uterus which can indeed lead to spotting.

Yes: Talk to your doctor about the pros and cons (nothing is entirely without risks or side effects), and they can prescribe for you if you decide this is right for you.  If hormones aren't the right answer, there are other options for treating acne, unstable mood, cramps and other symptoms often relieved by birth control.
