Yes body knows/respo: Dilantin is prescribed for control of seizures.Too much can cause side effects and body knows when it is too much as blood level goes up body responds with side effects.Same holds true when you take too little, seizures are not controllled.That is the reason to keep the blood level in threpeutic range.So if you are tapering for a reason, your body knows as level falls.Wean off gradually

Side effect: That is just one of the side effects of the dilatin.  It is called dilatin hyperplasia of the gums.  Must keep teeth clean to minimize the problem.  See dentist every 3 months.

Dilantin: Fetal hydantoin syndrome can occur in infants exposed to Dilantin while in the uterus during pregnancy. The common features include hirsutism (they are hairy), growth restriction, mild mental retardation and congenital anomalies such as cleft lip & palate, wide set eyes and small ends of the fingers.

Drug interactions: Pretty much all the ingredients in the over the counter cold medications have some interaction with Dilantin and/or tegretol, including increased liver toxigscity (from acetaminophen) and increased sedation.  I would suggest you discuss the problem with your family doctor.  Also, look at medlineplus.Gov (the national library of medicine patient education site) choosing drugs.

Gabapentin: Some trials have reported a less than 0.1 % occurrence of increase cholesterol  and hyperlipidemia  associated with Gabapentin use. Dilantin  has been associated with increase blood sugars. Please discuss any concerns with your doctor and do not stop taking your medications without consulting your doctor first. Hope this helps .
