Diaper rash: It could be infectious ( bacterial or fungal) or non- infectious ( allergies contact dermatitis). Either way, diagnosis can only be made after seeing the rash. Consult with your pediatrician.

Hand foot, mouth dis: Hand foot and mouth disease is most likely. Causing sores on the palate, around the mouth, in the diaper area, and hands and feet, they look like red spots or canker sores (white discs with red around them). Fever and pain are possible. It's viral and runs its course. Pain control is key. If this doesn't sound like what your child has, get it checked.

Diaper rash: The best trick to prevent a diaper rash is to change the diaper quickly whenever your baby dirties or pees. Exposing the diaper area to the air several times a day will also help. Do not wash bottoms with soap and water everytime he soils the diaper; wipes are good enough. Then apply an ointment - vaseline, vit. A&d, aquaphor at each change.

Not typically, but..: ...It can infect an already present diaper rash. It is more likely to cause one large "boil" than an all over rash, but if the rash is pustular then it could be either regular staph or MRSA (or yeast).

Skin Infection: Diaper rash can be due to irritation of the skin from urine and stool, called irritant contact dermatitis. Or, can  be by an yeast in the stool called minilial diaper dermatitis. If not treated, the excoriated skin may get secondary bacterial infection from the skin organisms causing boil or abscess. So, you will see both together in this case.

Diaper rash: Yes, otc creams such as desitin, (zinc oxide diaper cream) a&d oint, etc. Can be used.  Barrier creams or ointment to prevent irritation from the next wet or dirty diaper.  Apply liberally after every change. Small amounts of cortisone if very red or irritated also can be used occasionally.

Keep 'em clean: Prevention is better than cure. Remember to use small amounts of baby powder, since larger amounts tend to hold the moisture next to the skin instead of allowing the diapers to do their job. For a cure, meticulous hygiene, allowing the area to air dry, and using light amounts of over-the-counter products usually works. There are also prescription cures which you can get by seeing your doctor.
