Both contain DM: Since both Delsym and Nyquil contain DM (dextromethorphan), taking both would easily give a patient too much DM. One can switch from one to the other, waiting 12 hours after a Delsym dose (twice-a-day medication) or 6 hours after a Nyquil dose (four-times-a-day medication). It's best to not buy meds that have same or similar ingredients.

i am on 5mg of lexapro (escitalopram) and have a cold. is it safe to take nyquil/dayquil? i read online that there was a contraindication with dextromethorphan.

Avoid Nyquil/Dayquil: May risk interaction. Choose a cold product containing chlorpheniramine (antihistamine) and phenylephrine (decongestant). Drink fluids, inhale steam, blow nose carefully and frequently, use saline nasal spray, stay warm and rested, gargle with warm salt water, drink hot liquids (tea and honey very good), take steamy shower, prop head with extra pillow for sleep. Brst regards for relief.

: If you took 2 teaspoons of the RobitussinDM you should wait 4 hours before taking the Nyquil.  Your pharmacist can validate this advice.

Maybe : Just take a Benadryl (diphenhydramine) it'll knock you out. If you are coughing and miserable make an appointment with your doctor and get the codeine cough syrup and get 10 hours of sleep. It will help. Sleep works wonders and the codeine cough syrup is godsent for coughs keeping you up at night until you recover from your cold.

Not recommended: There should be no need to take both of those medications simultaneously as their effects will become additive. Stick with one of these and follow directions.

Unlikely to help: Cough is a protective reflex that allows the lungs to clear itself of irritants &amp; mucous debris. Studies of cough/cold preparations find they do little if anything in kids under 12. Mucinex can thin the secretions so they are easier to cough out, but the antihistamine containing products like NyQuil thicken them, making them harder to move.

Depends: I would wait at least 4 hours between the two.Some on the ingredients can interact but should not cause any problems in normal dosage but best to wait.
