Flu-like illness: Your symptoms fit a flu-like illness or real influenza by itself especially if accompanied by fever. Have you visited a 4h fair or anilmal fairs with swine recently? Recent cdc reports show influenza caused by swine flu h3n2 which is less severe than the regular swine flu. In any event, have yourself tested for influenza by your doctor.

Asthma?: Have you been checked for asthma?  I'm not sure how long the cough has been going on but if you have persistent or intermittent cough associated with wheezing then you should be checked for asthma.

recently ive noticed that theres a weird taste in my throat at times and im not sure what it is. the taste in my throat reminds me of when im sick and have a deep cough in my chest, but maybe mucus is causing this. what could be causing this?

Needs adequate follo: U r a 62 y/o female w/ several conditions probably requiring chronic medications.  u do not mention anything about shortness of breath, chest pain, fevers or any other related pulmonary symptoms.  I would want the answer to these questions but at least you would require an exam by your doctor as well as some labs and probably a chest xr.  also would want to know if others in your house smokes.

Cough after a cold: If a cough continues after a cold this could represent a sinus infection with cough from post nasal drip or less likely a pneumonia.  If the "cold" was really pertussis (whooping cough), the cough may continue for a few months.  With asthma, there is lingering cough after colds.  This may/may not be accompanied by wheezing and shortness of breath.  If cough persists over 4 weeks see a doctor.

Allergies/ asthma?: These symptoms could represent allergy symptoms or possibly asthma since the symptoms are worse at night.  I would suggest trying an over the counter antihistamine such as Zyrtec (cetirizine) at bedtime x one month.  If your symptoms do not improve by then, I suggest seeing your Doctor for an evaluation.
