Tenosynovaginitis: Yes, that word.  It's a problem of the tendon, it's lining, and the sheath of one of the thumb tendons.  They get irritated and enflamed.  It's quite painful.  They become thick and hard so the tendon can't slide normally.  This just makes things worse.  Early on, the first month or two, a cortisone shot and a brace can be effective treatment.  Later, it requires surgery.

DeQuervains: This is a thickening of the tendons on the palm side of the hand. These are the gripping tendons( flexor tendons) and is treatable with steroid  and novocaine injections, or if needed surgery. Application of a solution of DMSO with a steroide is sometimes very helpful.

It hurts: Mainly, it hurts.  If it gets bad enough, it can lock up the tendon.  I recently had a patient who had it so bad that the tendon had locked in  way that cocked her wrist to the side.  Surgery fixed it and she was soooo happy!

NO you won't die!: But you will suffer with pain if you wait.  This is a condition easily treated and you will be grateful for it!  get a cortisone shot if you haven't had it already.  Surgery if shot doesn't work!

Injection or surgery: Try a cortisone shot and brace first.  If that doesn't work then surgery.

Spica splint: A thumb spica splint, anti-inflammatory, and rest should get you back to normal. On occasion you may need a steroid injection. I have used prolotherapy with good results as well.

Yes: This is something that i often see in the office -- a simple corticosteroid shot will often help -- other options include bracing or physical therapy.
