: This is a hazardous combination as both can raise blood pressure and increase the heart rate. Instead of decongestants which contain symphathomimetic actions, take a plain antihistamine and carefully irrigate your nasal membranes with clean warm salt water.

is it safe to use a nasal decongestant such as afrin at night  (so i can sleep) when i'm 5 weeks pregnant?

Accepted Answer

Salt water nose drop: Continued use of afrin (oxymetazoline) can cause a cemical rhinitis. The salt water will have bo effect.

my ears are clogged due to cold so i likely have an infection in both ears. i got pills from the doc. but i still have pain when i wake up in the middle of the night. im thinking of buying decongestant for ears in the pharmacy, is it okay?

Yes: If you are congested, it should be fine to take in moderation. Use nasal saline rinses and please see your physician.

my 6 month old baby has been nose congested for 3 months now & snores at night, tried humidifier, saline drops, is it allegies? can he take decongestant?

Accepted Answer

Not the best: Over the counter cold medicines are no longer recommended for children, because studies have not shown that they really help, and they often cause side effects.  You should see your child's doctor to figure this out since it has lasted so long.  It would be unusual to have this much trouble with allergies so young but there is a simple ige blood test to check for allergies.

bad allergies x 3 days. i take allegra, and benadryl (diphenhydramine) at night. i am very congested and can't sleep. is there a decongestant okay to take with high bp?

Accepted Answer

No: It is not a good idea to take decongestant when you have hypertension. Consider an otc nasal steroid to see if it helps (may take a few days).  If not, see your doctor or an allergist.

have chronic post nasal drip past few weeks i think due to seasonal allergies. using saline irrigation at night. avoiding decongestants & antihistamines due to dry eye. now have acid reflux. related? how to fix?  suggestions?

Possibly: Use nasal saline irrigation to reduce post nasal drip, regardless of cause. Treat GERD, avoid spicy foods, eating or sleeping supine, prop pillows. Drink fluids. If the nasal congestion persists, add an over the counter nasal steroid and follow up with ENT. Watch for cough, avoid smoke and seasonal allergens.

is afrin enough of a decongestant when trying to get rid of sinus/ear infection, or do i need an oral decon too? taking cefdinir, prednisone and a zyrtec at night currently. nasal congestion better but ears still clogged, little hearing out of ears?

: Afrin is sufficient but you would do better with a combination anti histamine decongestant such as Zyrtec D or Claritin D. Good Luck

No specific one: There are numerous otc products available, but since no comparative controlled studies are, to my knowledge, available, it is impossible to say which is best.

Decongestant: If you do not have high blood pressure or other contraindications to decongestants, you can try phenylephrine contained in certain combination antihistamines, when necessary. Better yet, sterile saline spray or Cortaid nasal spray and I understand Flonase is OTC as well. Do not use Afrin or similar sprays for more than 3 days in a row to avoid rebound congestion, addiction, mucosal damage.

Topical decongestant: The long-acting OTC decongestant nasal spray will likely work the best. However do not use this for more than 5 days else you may end up hooked to the spray which is not healthy for your nose .
