i'm having a complete thyroidectomy in a few wks. will be put on 100mg levothyroxine. should i be on cytomel or natural desiccated thyroid as well?

Depends on response: Most people following thyroidectomy do fine on synthroid (levythyroxine) alone, as long as your thyroid functions are monitored and the dose is occasionally changed, if necessary.   However, some people produce too much reverse T3, in which case t3 (cytomel) augmentation can be useful.  Only a very small minority need desiccated thyroid.  Again, monitoring is the key.

am i a non responder to thyroid hormones?  i take 100mcg of levothyroxine and 50mcg of cytomel (liothyronine) (t3) daily. my tsh is 8.53 and freet4 is low @ .55

Probably not: What was your TSH before you started on treatment?  If it was 100 before you are doing much better. We usually use just levothyroxine to treat low thyroid hormone levels and not t3 (liothyronine) but t3 (liothyronine) treatment could be causing your free T4 to be too low.  
Poor absorption of thyroid from the gut is rare but do not take it with soy-containing food.  Stopping t3 (liothyronine) and increasing leveothyroxine to 125 might help.

FIRST THING IN THE: Morning usually, although some endocrinologists may recommend evening doses, on an empty stomach.

Yes: In the morning, but you still have to wait an hour to eat or drink for an hour.

Check it out: You may need more comprehensive thyroid testing to see if t3 (liothyronine) low. May, or may not need extra med.

Go to your doctor: Cytomel (liothyronine) is mainly for supplementation of your t3, which is way more potent than your T4 and is the end product of your t4. Be careful in taking medicines that your doctor has not prescribed as if you cause hyperthyroidism, your heart status can also suffer. It is best to have your level checked and medicine adjusted.

T3 (liothyronine): In some cases adding T3 (liothyronine) does help with metabolism. Blood tests for thyroid can include T3 (liothyronine) t$ and TSH to help your doctor determine.

Yes: These meds are not iodine but thyroid products, if you will, that assist and make it possible for you to have normal  metabolic function with an under active thyroid (not making enough on its own).

Labs: Get labs and make sure you are not hyperthyroid. The t3 (liothyronine) can cause nervousness. You need labs so you can adjust the meds accordingly.
