Rapid screening test: Dfa--direct fluorescent antibody test--a rapid diagnostic test done in the lab that takes 1-2 days to screen for pertussis (whooping cough). While much faster than a culture, this test is not as reliable. A nasal swab is inserted gently into the nostrils toward the throat (posterior nasopharynx). Then fluorescently labeled antibodies are exposed to the sample looking for pertussis antigens/markers.

No: No need to be concerned, pertussis very unlikely at this age, your baby has still got passive immunity from you, reflux can cause the dry cough, try not to overfeed, prop your baby up or at least 30 degrees while feeding, raise the head of the bed , keep clearing the nose with saline, if no improvement check with your pediatrician

how accurate are nasal swab flu tests? my sister had one yesterday @ our dr 's ofc, but it was neg for flu. she has fever, chills, is very achy, etc.

Accurate if positive: If a nasal swab flu test is positive, it is a very reliable result. The swab is nasopharyngeal, meaning the swab goes to the back of the nose to get a mucus sample. If it is negative, it is only somewhat reliable, which means a person with a negative result may still have influenza. A rough estimate is that 1 out of 4 people with cold or flu symptoms, who test negative, actually do have influenza.

Yes: It is still possible to have MRSA somewhere else on or in the body, even if it is not in the nose. However, the nose is a warm, moist place that is a useful place to look for the bacteria.

MRSA carriage : There is s lot of media attention and literature on MRSA in recent yrs. resulting in some confusion. If you had MRSA diagnosed before, thud chances are that you are colonized with it. Thx good news is that you can decrease colonization with proper monitoring and treatment as indicated.

very good evening doctors. i am waiting for pcr test results. i had the nasal swab this past friday, january 21. if the pcr were to come back positive (the rapid test results were negative), from what date would i start quarantine? i am fully vaxxed?

: This is good indicating that you are negative. Why would you quarantine?

good morning doctors. i had a nasal swab for a pcr test last friday, january 21st. rapid test was negative. i am still waiting for the pcr results. if the pcr results were to come back positive, which date would be day 1 of quarantine today is jan 26?

: The PCR test is the most accurate, if positive than quarantine right away. You still could have picked up the virus in between tests or the first test could have been a false negative. It does no harm if you quarantine more than 10 or 14 days.

if  a person has a nasal swab done & it cultures positive for "staph lugdunenis" but has no apparent signs of  infection/illness what should be done?

Interesting : This coagulase negative staph (not a staph aureus) can, however, behave like one.  If you have recurrent abscesses, it could be the cause.  If not, no therapy clearly needed but intranasal Mupirocin (bactroban) is not unreasonable.
