Scars: There is nothing that will get "rid" of scars. There are treatments that can make them less noticeable. For example if they are red in color then lazier treaents can reduce the redness. If they are hypertrophic than steroid injections may help. If they are keloid than excision with radiation treaents may be beneficial. You should see a board certified plastic surgeon or dermatologist for an opinio.

It takes time: The scar will be red initially, but eventually fade. Retin-a will speed the process, but not change the overall result.

Moisture is key: Moisture is the key- silicone gels are the only proven therapy to help relieving redness and helping to flatten a scar. Luckily many products like scar fade are now sold over the counter (i have no financial ties to this product). Kelo-cote is also a great option. If these don't help see a facial plastic surgeon or experienced dermatologists for answers.

Insect bite scar: Insect bites do not usually leave scars. If it's still red from the bite, it's probably too early for the redness to disappear. Wait at least 3 to 4 weeks for the redness to be gone. Meanwhile, do nothing and wash with a mild soap.

Nope: Topical ointments - especially at a potency at which OTC products use - are very rarely systemically absorbed.  Should be fine to use.  Good luck!
