have had a cough for 4 weeks on the dot. when it first started i was out for a day or two coughing up lots of phlegm. about 18 days and most of the symptoms have subsided but still have the cough. i am a smoker, 29 years old, could i have chronic b?

: Assume you mean chronic bronchitis?  Unlikely at your young age, but I strongly encourage you to work on smoking cessation now, or you will likely develop some degree of COPD eventually.  It sounds like you have a persistent cough from an acute bronchitis—type illness now, &amp; the cough is slow to resolve partly due to the smoking. If it persists you need a Dr exam to check for wheezing, etc.

Needs reason: The body always has a reason for what it does. Consistent coughing phlegm is abnormal. Not everyone who is sick feels sick or has fever. There are many potential reasons for the cough, not all of which will make you 'feel sick' it would be wise and appropriate to seek medical evaluation.

Swallowing trouble?: Swallowing trouble can reflect problems when moving food from mouth to upper esophagus (tranfer dysphagia) or when moving food down the esophagus (transit dysphagia). Partial obstruction of esophagus may "hang-up" dry solid foods but typically allow liquids to pass. Motility disorders may "hang-up" both solids as well as liquids. Consider gerd, spasm, as well as eosinophilic esophagitis here.

Pneumonia: I am concerned that you may be developing a pneumonia if you have a productive cough with chest pain.  You should be evaluated by a physician.

Timeline: If these symptoms are present for the last few days it is likely a viral infection.  Rest, increased water intake, over the counter mucolytic agents (ie guafenesin) can all help.  If the symptoms are present for longer then you may require antibiotic therapy.

See your PCP: YoWIN_20141105_144005u need to see your Primary Care Physician now-this is an infection and can be anything from acute bronchitis to pneumonia.

Chronic bronchitis: Smokers are more likely to cough at night and first thing in the morning because the smoke damages the lungs ability to clean itself so mucus sits during periods of inactivity,  becomes discolored, and then is coughed out.  If the  green mucus is recent consider viral illness or pneumonia.

is it possible to suffocate if you have a lot of phlegm that you can not cough up?

Could feel that way: Lots of fluid in your lungs could prevent aeration of the lungs causing dyspnea and could lead to respiratory failure.

Cough: Rest, hydrate really well &amp; eat healthfully. Consider use of acetaminophen, saline for nasal irrigation, decongestant or cough syrup.

Chronic cough: I don't know why you have a chronic cough, but the cause of that is the cause of the phlegm.  The most common causes of chronic cough (asthma, reflux, drugs) don't usually produce phlegm, but allergies with post nasal drip may. See your physician this week to see what is behind your cough.
