Several reasons: Cough syrup (cough suppressant) only treats the cough and not the underlying condition that is "causing" the cough.  Also, some cough syrups contain narcotic medication which can lead to addiction.  In the long run, it is a good idea to avoid medications with addiction potential.

Opioid abuse: Cough medicine is likely an opiod similar to vicodan.  If you can't or wont stop using it despite having concerns than you have a problem no matter how many or few symptoms you have.

Cough medicine abuse: There are no pills that cure cough medicine abuse. There are medications that can help you reduce the symptoms of withdrawal when you try to quit. Clonidine is one example. See a doctor.

Not a good idea: There are several versions of nyquil and most if not all of them contain cough medicine.  Taking another cough syrup would probably give you too much dextromethorophan.

Cough: is necessary attempt by the body to clear undesirable irritants. I do rarely recommend cough suppressants. I recommend expectorates. Many are available over the counter in any pharmacy in the US
