Over-the-counter med: Cough &amp; cold medicines are available over-the-counter w/o prescription in the States. Assuming that you're otherwise healthy &amp; not taking any prescription medications, most cough meds should be fine for average citizen. Those w/high blood pressure should avoid decongestants while elderly should avoid older 1st generation antihistamines (side effects = dry eyes/mouth, can't pee/poop, confusion).

Antitussives: You can try using that medication, but if it does not help check with your friendly pharmacist and ask for a product containing dextromethorphan. The bottles will be marked with a DM.

Antihistamines: Coughs are caused by mucous running down into your lungs from your nose.  If you use an antihistamine (such as benedryl, Claritin (loratadine) or zyrtec)  to dry up the post-nasal drip the cough will be better.  It's best not to use a cough suppressant especially in children because if the mucous is not coughed up it can lead to pneumonia and cough suppressants can have dangerous side effects.

Depends...: Cough is a reflex that is there for a reason. In order to get rid of a cough, you need to find out why it is there. If the cough is getting rid of secretions, suppressing it is dangerous. Keeping hydrated so the secretions are thin and easy to cough up is key. If the cough is due to bronchospasm, bronchodilator med is the answer. So, treating the cause of cough is needed to get rid of it!

What helped before: Cough medicines are for decreasing the urge to cough, due to tickling, mucus, or mild irritation in the throat. Coughing is desired and is needed when there is mucus lower in the throat, or coming from the lungs (otherwise, mucus would stay in the lungs and lead to pneumonia). Menthol lozenges +/- anesthetic in the lozenge, can help. Robitussin dm (guaifenesin and dextromethorphan) +/- "cold medicines", can help. Sipping tea helps.
