is it more painful to have a core needle biopsy of three different spots than only one? what about the recovery? it takes more time?

Accepted Answer

Biopsy: Logically you may expect more discomfort from 3 pokes than from a single one. But nowdays biopsies are done under some anesthesia, so there is a good chance amount of pain will be minimal either way. Recovery is usually minimal, however, it depends on what organ is biopsied. I wish it goes well for you and nothing bad is found.

i had a u/s guided core needle biopsy done of a complicated cyst as my dr said he was being overly cautious. the cyst resolved during the procedure. what does this mean? what is the implication in terms of my results, if any? waiting for those?

Accepted Answer

: It would seem that the contents of the cyst were drained by the biopsy process which means the cyst collapsed and "resolved".  Hopefully that is the case but some will seal off the opening and reform.  At your age it is likely to be benign but I am sure that your doctor who tapped this cyst sent the contents off for pathology to confirm that issue.  Ask him/her about that.

What part of body?: Pain from a needle biopsy is dependent on what pain fibers are present in the organ being biopsied and what tissues need to be traversed between the skin and that organ.  Therefore, superficial structures like the breast, thyroid, certain lymph nodes, and lumps just under the skin can be biopsied w/local alone. If we have to enter a body cavity, some sedation may be necessary, as well.

All tissue examined: In the case of biopsies all tissues are examined. Even small pieces of tissue are important and are not ignored.

Definitive Diagnosis: In this day and age, we have many noninvasive tests that can get us "in the ballpark" when trying to make a diagnosis.  However, when it comes to cancer diagnosis, nothing replaces looking at tissue under the microscope;  this requires a biopsy.  Thankfully, needle biopsies can usually be done under local anesthesia alone (depending on site) without the need for surgery.  Good luck!

Benign breast lump: You have several options to have it removed. Some fibroadenomas may contain cysts, calcifications, and hyperplasia. This can be determined by pathology review of the biopsy. Removal of the mass can be performed by lumpectomy or other less invasive options such as laser or cryoablation. It is best to consult with your physician and select the option that seems best suited.

Yes: If there is a true pathologic process, while normal breast tissue can be very soft, a lesion can be sclerotic.  Even if core biopsy is undefined, the presence of a pathologic process that cant be defined by biopsy, requires excision to establish true diagnosis and may as such be therapeutic also.

is core needle biopsy enough to rule out lymphoma with insufficient sample for flow cytometry but no cancer observed on microscopy?

Probably not: A small sample is subject to error. If lymphoma is a serious consideration, removal, of a node should be considered.

There : There are different types of needle biopsies - depending on the size of the needle used.  A "fine needle aspiration" uses a small needle to extract fluid or a few cells while a core needle biopsy actually removes a small piece of tissue.  The size of the core can vary from very small to about 2.5 mm in diameter.

Overwhelming: Odds are that your breast lump is not cancerous, at your age if you are 17.  Wait for results of biopsy to make sure.
