Valcyclovir or other: You need to see your ophthalmologist because herpes of teh eye can lead to loss of vision

Possibly: If the topical bacitracin that you put in the eye is meant for the eye, then yes it can possibly treat a mild bacterial conjunctivitis. If the medication is not meant for the eye, I would hold off putting any more in. There are components of non-ophthalmic medications that can irritate the eye and cause more harm than good. I would follow up with doctor tomorrow.

Take precautions: The simplest way to do this is using a cotton tipped swab. You coat the tip of the swab with the cream and use the swab to apply the cream to the specific areas on the lid. You must try not to rub the lids after this is applied.If a small amount gets in your eye, it should not create a problem.

Possible: Could be related to a virus or other infectious cause. Also can be related to other causes. Would need more information and to examine the eye to make accurate diagnosis. If concerned, see doctor for eval and possible treatment if needed.

Conjunctivitis: Viral conjunctivitis associated with the common cold usually produces watery discharge.  Thick ocular mucus usually means bacterial conjunctivitis and often requires antibiotic therapy.

Generalized: If the cause of the cold is a virus that could cause conjunctivitis, then your conquest of the cold will immunize you against conjunctivitis from that particular strain.

Accepted Answer

Better not: Neosporin is an effective antibiotic but rather highly allergenic.  Most pink eye is due to virus so antibiotics will not help.  You can use vaseline or skin cream to ease the raw skin.  Keep it clean with cool soaks and don't allow the secretions to dry on the skin.  If it lasts more than 5 days or the vision starts to drop, then see your ophthalmologist.
