Peppermint oil: Ingestion of too much peppermint oil can cause nausea/ vomiting, abdominal pain, v heart rate, respiratory problems, dizziness, seizures or loss of consciousness.

Accepted Answer

Generally Safe: Probably safe in the short term (less than 8 weeks). Heartburn, allergic reactions, flushing, headache and mouth sores are most common.  Since peppermint is processed in the liver, check with your physician to make sure that there are no interactions with other medications you are taking that are also processed along similar pathways in the liver.

Depends.: If you are putting it on an open sore or cracked skin, it may not help and may make things worse. Any break in the skin increases absorption into the system of anything put on the skin.  Also, a person can be allergic to either one and that is bad, too and this can have systemic effects.  For the proper use of herbal products, make sure there is good, unbiased, ad-free research to justify it.

Possibly: Peppermint oil interacts with a good number of medications that are metabolized by the liver. Birth control pills are metabolized by the liver; so it's likely there is an interaction although i could not find a definitive reference stating what effect the oil would have on bcp's. Your gynecologist may have more information.

Watch abdominal pain: Colpermin ( peppermint) advertised for managing irritable bowel syndrome (ibs) paracetamol (acetaminophen (tylenol)) for pain/fever relief.These can be taken together, do not crush colpermin  swallow whole(to avoid mouth pain/sores). Limit paracetamol to max 6 tablets /day (each tab 500 mg). Limit alcohol intake while on these combination to reduce risk of liver damage. Report abdomen pain , nausea.

Eating more fresh vegetables like spinach or other dark greens , and laxative fruits like prunes, avoiding processed dehydrated salty foods, avoiding dehydration, and getting a good night sleep, moving through the day, and lowering stress will help as well.
