Several kinds: Clostridium is a bacterial genus. There are many species:c. Perfringens causes gas gangrene, c. Botulinum causes botulism (food poisoning). C. Difficele produces a toxin that causes severe diarrhea  and fever. It occurs as a result of overgrowth of c. Difficele in the colon, which is an adverse effect  following the use of antibiotics.  It is treatable with antibiotics directed specifically at it, .

Antibiotics: After your doctor confirms your c diff infection with a stool sample at the lab, you will be started on antibiotics.  Typically it is either Metronidazole (flagyl) or vancomycin orally that is the treatment prescribed.

Not really: No - c. Diff is a bacteria, that everyone has in their gut all the time.  Normally, it staysin balance with other bacteria and doesnt cause problems.  However, sometimes it takes advantage and overgrows and acts up - like after antibiotics.  We dont really develop immunity to it, just get back into appropriately balance so that it doesnt act up again.

Clinically & tests: Sometimes you can suspect the diagnosis based on the clinical circumstances.  You can also detect the presence of the toxin in stools with lab tests designed for this purpose.

Yes.: A recurrence of c. Diff can be treated effectively, but it usually takes a different type of antibiotic and sometimes for a longer course (called a "pulsed and taper" schedule) you may find that in addition you will be asked to take a probiotic as well.  Wash your hands (and tell family members too) with soap and water frequently!  the alcohol gel will not destroy the c.Diff spores.  Good luck!

why are clostridium difficile infections hard to treat?

It produces spores: Partly it is the persons immune system and general health that makes it recur more often.  The main problem is it comes back after treatment.  Clostridium produces endospores.  Endospore is is a tough structure in which the bacteria is dormant and not reproducing.  Antibiotics don't affect the spores so after the symptoms are gone, the spores activate and  then cause reinfection.
