Adverse effects may include dry mouth, 
drowsiness, trouble sleeping, excessive sweating, involuntary quivering, nausea, 
diarrhea.

Black box: The only antidepressant ssri that got black box warning about heart problems is celexa (citalopram). There is a recent wanring about Celexa (citalopram) causing some heart conduction problems for all ages, but I have yet to see one case. Not advised after 50. Otherwise is not known to cause significant or noticeable side effects. Must not  take it if pregnant as the safety record is now not complete on ssri.

Celexa: You might feel dizzy, feel more tired, have a more rapid heart rate, sweat more &amp; experience nausea or vomiting.

2+ weeks, roughly: Antidepressants take some time to start working, and they take a similar amount of time to stop working, too.  This varies from about a week to a month or more.  But for most people it's about 2 or 3 weeks.  Note that this applies to the antidepressant effect.  Side effects such as agitation or upset stomach usually start right away, and end right away too, often in a day or two after stopping.

Depends on amount: Taking more or less of a prescription medicatoin than the doctor has ordered is rarely if ever a good idea.  Accidental missed or double doses do occur, though.  With citalopram, a single double dose probably will have no noticeable effect.  Very high doses of this and other ssris can cause "serotonin syndrome, " however, which includes restlessness, elevated bp, and fever and can be fatal.

Withdrawal / relapse: Ssris like Celexa (citalopram) may cause a "discontinuation syndrome" that starts a day or two after stopping, especially if the med is not tapered off.  This usually lasts a few days but can persist a week or more.  Ssris continue to work in the body for a few weeks after stopping, so a relapse (eg, the original depression returning) might occur after that, ie a few weeks later.

Yes: My rule of thumb is, if zero response in 4 weeks, probably time to increase dose or change meds. If partial response, wait the full 6 wks and consider augmentation options.

Celexa (citalopram): Side effects of Celexa (citalopram) include erectile dysfunction, decrease in sex drive & ejaculation issues. Other common side effects are insomnia, sweating, shakiness, drowsiness & dry mouth. Loose bowel movement, abdominal pain, vomiting, nausea, loss of appetite & heartburn can also occur, as well as anxiety, fatigue, fever & muscle pain.
