i started yasmin birth control today after being off for five months. i am reading stats on the chance of blood clots and have myself worried, i'm young workout and had been on this medication for almost five years before stopping. is yasmin safe ?

Alternatives: The concern is over the drospirenone (synthetic progesterone) component of the pill.  Some studies suggest that Yasmin and Yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) may have a higher risk of venous blood clots than older birth control pills.  However, there are risks associated with any pill, and the benefits generally outweigh the risks.  The decision of which pill to use should be made between you and your doctor.

Known risk: Unfortunately deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism and death, although rare, are known complications of estrogen containing contraception. The risk is lower than the risks of these occurring with pregnancy but it is a known risk.  Death form a car accident is more likely than death from complications of  contraception.

Legal reasons: It is a legal requirement (government legislation) that a script can only be dated valid for 6 months.  Further arrangements must be made with your treating doctor.  Monitoring of any person on a scheduled medication is also needed.

Change in bcp's: While taking the active pills in a pack of "Yasmin", simply begin the next day taking the first "Yaz" active pill in a new pack. This will extend the length of active pills, but is safe and acceptable.

No: There really shouldn't be any great side effects as the only difference between the 2 is the addition of folic acid

Contraceptives: If this is your first month taking them it is normal due to the hormones, you can wait for another cycle for it to normalize. However, if it is not your first month or you feel like the discomfort is too much to take, you can see your gynecologist to check you options and see what other method would suit you.
