Secondly coughing very heavily can set off something we call a vaso-vagal syndrome and cause him to be lightheaded or even pass out. Most people recover without problems, but have him get an exam as noted above.

Irritation: Spices like pepper and hot chilis cause irritation which can make you sneeze and cough. I suspect you are having a mild case of layrngeospasm which the cold food. I am mildly concerned about this becuase if you had a severe reaction it could be serious. Perhaps an ENT doctor could help you figure this problem out.

If you are with someone choking on food grab them at the base of the rib cage from behind in a hug, make a fist with one hand, holding it with the other and quickly  and forcefully pull in/up. The force of your breathe will dislodge whatever you are choking on.  If alone and choking Push your lower ribs into a corner of a table/chair forcefully.
