The SSRI is a category C drug during pregnancy with some but workable effects on some newborns.The Copaxone (glatiramer) is a category B with no negatives.You will need to have great family support and or a nanny to deal wit rambunctious kids, so be prepared.

Good on meds: Bipolar disease is an inherited disorder that can present at any age.  When symptoms occur in children, they can often be controlled with medication.  It is likely that the child will require some form of medication during his/her lifetime; however, on medication, the child can be symptom free.

Environment: Dust free environment, change pillow cases twice a week, no pets in bedroom, change bed sheets once a week, remove rugs in bedroom, ventilate bedroom clean air filters.  Try slowing breathing rate down by blowing out like you blowing out a candle to lengthen time of exhaling air. Check with pediatrician.

Medicine tastes bad: Medicine tastes nasty, really nasty. It has to be sweetened and "dealt with" to make it palatable. I've tasted some of these, and found it difficult not to make a scene in front of the family. Natural flavors are expensive, and may go bad after awhile. Plus, artificial flavors are just more powerful at covering the nasty taste. Unfortunately, it may just be a necessary evil for now.

Depends: This all depends on the child's specific situation.  Some children do well on adhd meds, some do not.  It is best to work with your pediatrician to try a combination of adhd drug trials and work with a mental health counselor or child psychiatrist to find a solution that works for you and your child.

Yes: Try eliminating dairy, gluten and processed foods. Have child play outside daily..Reconnecting with nature can be helpful. Probiotics and cod liver oil help in some cases. Homeopathy, chinese medicine can also help immensely. Get tv, computer, electronics out of child's bedroom. Some supplements that provide Amino Acids and b vitamins can be helpful....One example is one called brain sustain.

what are side effects in a child from adhd medication?

Weight loss, insomni: The most noticeable side effect is wt loss due to decrease appetite. I've also seen a lot of children being very angry and agressive as soon as the effect is gone. Usually around 4 pm, depending on the dose and medicine.This could be solved adding a short term stimulant, like plain Ritalin (methylphenidate) around 1 pm. Make sure to monitor bed time. Stimulants also cause insomnia.
