Vaccination: If you get the flu every year, you need to be vaccinated.  It will help prevent the most common strains of influenza.  See your physician if you think you have it, as antiviral medications can help if taken appropriately.

Need Eval Today...: You need to be evaluated by your doctor asap! if you are having any shortness of breath or if this worsens, go to the er. This may be acute bronchitis that will respond to antibiotics but this could also be due to a malignancy, especially in a smoker. You need to quit smoking immediately as well and your doctor can help with this, too, please see a doctor today! good luck!

See a doctor: These pains are concerning for angina, you need to see a doctor, have an ekg and possibly either a stress test, or dependent on the rest of your history and ekg, even an angiogram.

Lung/heart/ribs: A viral illness can cause costochondritis (tenderness in the cartilage between the ribs).  Press the ribs and if tender try putting ice on spot.  Some heart problems such as pericarditis (inflammation in the sac around the heart) can cause pain and fever.  Blood clots in the lung (pulmonary embolus) can cause fever and chest pains.  Suggest cardiac and pulmonary evaluation with cxray, ekg etc.

Cough isn't there...: Cough isn't there in some cases of pneumonia, when patients see their doctors. However, if a pneumonia is left untreated, the cough will soon start.

Phlegm w/o cough: More info is needed. Do you have fever? Have you been exposed to toxic material? Do you have heart disease with congestive heart failure? Is there any underlying lung disease?  An evaluation by your doctor will be the first place to start to learn the cause of your symptoms.
