Cerclage: A cerclage is when the cervix is stitched closed.  It can be done in early pregnancy in women who have had a prior preterm delivery due to cervical insufficiency or weak cervix.  This helps prevent the cervix from opening early and is called prophylactic cerclage. It can also be done later in pregnancy up to about 23 weeks and is called an emergent cerclage. It is usually removed at 36-37 weeks.

My idea: I believe that stitch results from a fold in the pleura, the membrane that lines the lungs, and this is more likely to happen when the lungs are expanding and contracting very rapidly. Nobody's looked at this scientifically.

Not advisable.: It is always important for your surgeon to evaluate a surgical wound within the first few weeks after surgery, at which time the stitches can be removed.  If the incision is not healing well, the sutures may be kept in longer or removed and replaced with special butterfly bandages.  As always, it is best to follow your surgeon's advice.
