No : Lipomas are benign overgrowth of fat cells in one location.  They are not cancer.  One argument remove "lipomas" if they start causing symptoms, are large, or getting larger is that a liposarcoma can present like a lipoma.  A liposarcoma is a very rare cancer.

have small lipoma (1/2 size of pea) for over 30 years just above butt .  it moved freely but now seems not to move freely.  doctors have checked and confirmed fatty tumor from accident.  can a lipoma make such changes?

Yes: Yes it is possible for lipoma to not move as freely if it has been long standing as some fibrotic changes can start happening. As long as it is not dramatically changing in size and starting to cause symptoms, it can be simply monitored. If not it can be removed by a dermatologist and biopsied.

Any of the above: One needs to examine and even biopsy the area to get you the answer.  In fact, you have already narrowed down the potential diagnosis yourself.

Ur Dr. Knows Best: If your surgeon thinks it is a lipoma, that's more-than-likely correct. Although often painless, angiolipomas (benign) can cause pain. Also, if the lipoma is under the fascia next to muscle, it may cause pain.  I'm sure the surgery will go well and you'll know with 100% certainty what it is. Good luck!

Regardless : Regardless of what she thinks it is, a mass that is causing pain needs to be evaluated further, either by imaging studies like an ultrasound or be biopsied or possibly removed. A general surgeon will be able to examine you and advise you on the next best course of action. For now you can try an NSAID like Ibuprofen or advil (ibuprofen) for the pain. If this does not help your primary care provider may prescribe another medication until you are able to see a surgeon.

Benign fatty tumors: Angiolipomas are benign fatty tumors that have a more extensive development of vascular channels (angio) than simple lipomas.  The more extensive vascular channels do not represent malignancy as is often the case in other tumors. They are more commonly tender to touch than simple lipomas.  Excision is not necessary unless they are growing or are painful.

In the extremity if the tumor is painful or larger than 10 cm. it should be excised   In  the retroperitoneum around the fat pad of the kidney, all fatty tumors should be resected.

Benign vs. cancer: Lipomas are a benign fatty growth that sometimes can have benign projections of fatty lumps under tissue plains. Liposarcoma is a cancerous growth & is often confined within its own soft covering & often pushes away other tissues and organs as it grows.
