Many other causes: Hot flashes have lots of possible causes. The most common cause for a woman in her mid 40's is perimenopause (although I don't now if you are a female). Other causes include: medications, especially SSRI antidepressants and niacin, Obesity, excessive eating, alcohol intake, smoking, stress, tumors, infections, thyroid and other hormone problems, and inflammatory illnesses.

POSSIBLY: That said, hot flashes are cause by a drop in estrogen levels in the brain. Therefore, any low estrogen state can cause them. Blood tests and a vag sonogram can answer your question promptly and accurately.

Yes other causes: There are other causes including medications. Hot flashes can be a side effect of  food additive mono-sodium glutamate (msg), or of Nifedipine (procardia, adalat), Niacin (numerous brand names), antibiotics: vancomycin, gemifloxacin and lomefloxacin.
Calcitonin and headache medicines topiramate and maxalt (rizatriptan). Thyroid disease, hidden infection ( like tb) and some cancers can also cause hot flashes.

SSRI's: Many ssri's are. There are some good articles about effectiveness of Lexapro (escitalopram) for this purpose.

i have a problem with terrible hot flashes at night.  i am not menopausal, according to my obgyn.  could lithium or levothyroxine cause this trouble?

Rare: So far only 33 people have reported night sweats on lithium to the fda. 315 people reported the same side effect, night sweats, on levothyroxin. It is therefore rare with both given the significant number of people in the United States that take these medications. I think would be reasonable to have your thyroid rechecked because excessive or over correction of your thyroid with levothyroxin can cost night sweats if you are in the hyper thyroid range.
