Not conclusive: There is not confirmation that it causes bladder cancer. The study you are mentioning was done in france where there is a very high percentage of smokers. Smoking can increase the level of bladder cancer. Kaiser is currently doing a large study to see if there is any association. Most of us still use Actos (pioglitazone) with our patients. Diabetes can be a bad disease also.

Acots side effects: Weight gain is a known side effect of Actos (pioglitazone).  The good news is that Actos is very effective in reducing visceral fat (fat in the abdomen) which is associated with increased risk for cardiovascular disease.  The weight gain from Actos is peripheral and  does not carry the same risk as visceral fat.  As always watching calorie intake and activity to loose weight is key.

Maybe (not) . . .: I like to use www.drugs.com to search for medication info. I could not find any mention of irregular menses or amenorrhea (cessation of menses) linked to any of above listed meds. However, there are many reasons for irregular menses, including pregnancy &amp; (early) menopause. If you've never had a fast or irregular heart rate, your doc might consider trading Metoprolol for an ACEI/ARB if BP high

Benefit vs risk..: Like any other medicine in use, consider benefit vs risk--same as driving a car (getting to  places faster with risk of accident/breakdown etc..). Currently the biggest concern for people is the risk of bladder cancer on long-term use (40% increase/yr: from 7/10000 to 10/10000 cases). The percentage is big, but absolute is still small. There are alternatives! so, consult doc. Good luck.

Media frenzy: Actos (pioglitazone) is a good drug for diabetes.  All drugs in this class cause fluid retention, which can worsen heart failure in some people.  A related drug (avandia) got slammed for increasing coronary heart disease, but this never affected actos (pioglitazone).  These drugs may increase bone loss.  Now there is a weak inference of bladder cancer, and the media and lawyers are all over this like sharks on fresh meat.

It depends: In general, it's not used in pregnancy. It's fda category c, which means its only used in pregnancy if the potential benefit to the woman outweighs the potential damaging effects on the developing fetus. Check with your doctor and see if he/she feels it's a must.

None.: None.  But the acai berry is more hype, albeit very rich in anti-oxidants. There are many more potent sources than the acai for anti-oxidants.

But, no risk in taking it with actos (pioglitazone).

Actos (pioglitazone): Actos (pioglitazone) should be taken half hour before breakfast and Lisinopril should be taken at the same time daily.
