A little vague term: The term nephritis generally means inflammation of the kidneys filtering units. The usual term is glomerulonephritis gn. However, whatever term you use is not adequate to describe the underlying mechanism of disease. That is why the full terms are membranous glomerulonephritis, minimal glomerulonephritis, hereditary nephritis etc. If you have nephritis ask you doctor for the full name/description.

Often a biopsy needed to determine severity and prognosis-class I,II,III, IV,  V, and VI, with six being the most severe.  Treatment includes corticosteroid, azothioprin, cyclophosamide, mycophenelate mofetil,cyclosporin. dialysis. Remission can occur.

Because it works: Cellcept (mycophenolate mofetil) is the preferred drug for lupus nephritis because it is very effective and has much less risk than alternative meds. It does not cause significant elevations of BUN or creatinine.
