Analyzing the sequence of event &amp; physical exam will help elucidate.

Just one side?: Unilateral swelling without trauma could suggest venous insufficiency or thrombophlebitis. A venous doppler or ultrasound can help make the diagnosis. If there is redness and warmth especially around the great toe joint this could an acute gouty attack. Infection is less likely especially w/o a skin ulceration or open wound. See a doctor.

No: The "stress" in stress fracture refers to a mechanical stress, not an emotional state. Stress fractures are caused by multiple small injuries to the foot. Typically a sports injury. The injuries may be so slight that you don't even notice them, walking long distances for example.

: Pressure on your big toe with the brace can cause it to be numb for quite awhile, even a few months. The toe nail falling off is not uncommon if there was butting up of the toe at the end of the toe. This can even happen with running shoes that are too small and constant butting up of the end of the toenail. The nail usually grows back and is not a prooblem.

Tendonitis: At your age, tendonitis of the medial tendons of the ankle (Tib Posterior, Flex Dig. Long., Flex Hall. Long)  Also consider arthritis (rare at your age).
