Getting caught: I don't know if it will make a difference. BUT WHY TAKE THE RISK? - this is a time consuming and costly test.

No: The EEG will reveal awake and asleep brain waves. If while using cannabis you were very relaxed the EEG may show a pattern of a relaxed brain state. But  the EEG findings are not specific for medication or other substances.

Cannabis: Daniel Amen, MD does research on the brain and cannabis.  He finds differences in brains of those using cannabis.  Please be sure to tell your doc that you are using this substance because it can impact his/her reading of your results.  Peace and good health.

Unlikely: Although certain components of cannabinoids are being evaluated as anti-epileptic agents, it is very unlikely that smoking marijuana regularly will affect the outcome of a 3 day ambulatory EEG, which typically picks up most of seizure activity quite thoroughly.

VAGUELY ACCURATE: An EEG is a recording of brain electrical activity taken over the scalp, over about 45 minutes.  This brief period may completely miss many paroxysmal events and provide a false negative/normal result.  Work with direct electrodes implanted into brain have convincingly demonstrated far more pathology than external recordings.  So, basically "hit or miss" issues, and better to clinically assess.

: Cannabis is now administered in forms which provide benefit in many medical studies, but the hallucinogenic aspect of smoking cannabis has mixed reports, and can be overdone.  Best is to consult your physician about appropriate use of cannabis products, (if permitted by state laws).

Normal: The eeg is a record of brain electrical activity.  It may show characteristic findings in certain epileptic conditions and for certain disease states.  Autism spectrum disorders, including asperger's syndrome, will have a normal eeg unless some other process is occurring.  There is a higher incidence of epilepsy in the autism spectrum disorders, but should be considered as a separate problem.
