Accepted Answer

Mostly: Usually metastases to the brain herald a poor prognosis but they should be treated nonetheless to avoid seizures and headaches. There are a few cases in which a single or a couple of mets in the brain can be operated and radiated and the patient may do well long term if the cancer is under control elsewhere.  Can't say it happens often, though. Best to you.

No: It is a bad sign, however, there are some people who do well for a long time.  Now, unfortunately, this is the exception to the rule.  I have several patients doing well a year or 2 after brain radiation.  My partner has a lady who is 10 years out from brain metastases from breast cancer.  So in summary, not a good situation but there are some long term survivors.

Imaging studies...: If a person has cancer that has spread to the brain from another body site, the person may have symptoms such as headache, confusion, personality changes, seizures, etc... 
If there is suspicion of metastatic cancer in the brain, then the patient can undergo imaging studies of the brain such as a ct scan or an mri.  These studies will allow the care team to diagnoses metastases in most situations.

Metastasis: This is called brain metastasis (singular) or metastases (plural). Sometimes the slang term "brain met" is used.

Small: In 2012 less than 3% of cancers were of the brain and nervous systems. In women, about 2% of cancer deaths were due to brain and other nervous system cancers. I hope this helps. Good luck.

Several ways.: There are tumors that originate in the brain itself, then there are metastatic tumors that originate elsewhere and spread to the brain. Symptoms vary widely, and can include headache, seizures, and sensory or motor disturbances. The specific genetic factors that lead to brain tumors are not well known, but family history, age, race and exposure to ionizing radiation & chemicals increase the risk.

Depends on tumor : Type. Some tumors spread to brain more often than others, e.g., lung cancer, melanoma spread to brain more often than colon cancer.

Where in the brain?: General symptoms include headache, nausea and vomiting. 

Vomiting without preceding nausea is particularly worrisome. 

Headache that wakes you from sleep is concerning. 

Headache that starts first thing in the morning. 

Depending on where in the brain the tumor is, though, even very small tumors can cause almost any kids of brain symptoms (weakness, numbness, confusion, speech, balance, vision.

Not necessarily: There are many types of brain cancer, some of which may be quite curable. A lot depends on the type and the size of the cancer.

Risk unclear: I can't recommend taking anything to make you goofy, even alcohol. No one has linked cannabis or psilocybin to brain tumors or grave injury. Heavy cannabis users do seem dim to others. If you do choose to do this -- and i know it's legal in the netherlands -- remember that you're at your peak for learning, developing yourself socially and professionally and physically -- why do drugs instead?
