Yes.I would recommen: d Miralax (polyethylene glycol) or for something stronger,Milk of Magnesia.Also,Increace your daily fiber with something like a bowl of Raisin Bran every morning.This will help prevent future constipation issues naturally.??

Yes: Do not forget hydration and exercise, such as a brisk half an hour walk or sit-ups. A stimulant laxative such as Senna may help. If no response, a  Dulcolax suppository should be in place. Hope it helps.

Wetting agent: Miralax (polyethylene glycol) is primarily a wetting agent,that holds on to water as it moves through your system and softens the stool.It is not addicting,but when you wean off the material, I would do so gradually.When your stool softens, you should empty more often, so the fissure is not pressured by a larger volume. This should allow healing within a week or two, but recurrence can occur if you return to old habits

Stool softeners: Occasional constipation can be managed at home with stool softeners, such as docusate and polyethylene glycol 3350.  A stimulant laxative, such as senna or bisacodyl, can be added if the stool softener alone is not effective, but should not be taken continuously without physician supervision.  If you only have a bowel movement after taking a stimulant laxative, you should see a doctor.

Constipation: Fiber, fluids, stool softeners &amp; laxatives are good standard recommendations. Don't forget exercise - seriously! Try to avoid medications if possible b/c no such thing as free lunch eg no side effects. PEG or Miralax appears safe enough after yrs of bowel prep to be available OTC. Amitiza (lubiprostone) &amp; Linzess are 2 new meds. Make sure to find cause: hypothyroidism, colon cancer, narcotics, anticholinergics.

Good question: A stool softener causes bulk to the stools and pulls liquid from the walls of the colon to aid in making the stools earier to pass.  A laxative irritates or changes the physiologic function of the bowel to cause it to increase its contractions and expel stool.
