why do i still get cysts when taking birth control pills?

Lots of types cysts: There are lots of different types of ovarian cysts--some that come and go on their own, some that are associated with hormone imbalances likes polycystic ovary syndrome, others that grow, and others that may even be cancer.  So it depends.  Ask your doctor to explain to you what type you had and how it affects your fertility.  Birth control pills stop some kinds of cysts but not all.

? Overweight: If you are overweight you may have poly cystic ovarian syndrome. (pcos). The primary treatment for this is weight loss through diet and exercise.  A diabetic medication called metformin may also be beneficial.

taking birth control pills for almost 2 yrs after a 7.5 cm cyst was removed. never miss a pill. still get painful cysts every month. why is this?

It depends what pill: U are taking i would rec u take the pill continuously because that should suppress any ovarian cyst formation, if you are on a 21-7 pill and take the 7 pills at the end and have a period those 7 days are enough to permit a cyst to form if you are not going to take the pill continuously then you should be on a pill like loloestrin where u are only off the pill for 2 days so a cyst shouldn't form.

Yes !: 20% of women on the pill may ovulate  while still not getting pregnant . Ovulation is preceded by a small cyst that will release the egg.

Sort of: If you have the normal follicular / physiologic ovarian cysts that occur for every woman during every cycle, then yes the pill will usually suppress the ovaries and the cysts will usually lessen with time.

Yes: Ovarian cysts are generated by ovulation monthly, and wax/wane with your estrogen levels. Birth control pills, depending on composition, can stimulate ovarian cysts, and can make things worse. Best idea is to talk this over with your OB if your BCP's are making things worse, can change the type and possibly lessen any symptoms

Cysts: Cysts occur is almost every tissue. In general, if they are infected or inflamed surgical intervention is a benefit. In your specific case, it is okay to ask your doc about your options, risk/benefit analysis of a surgical procedure. There are choices.

No: Cysts usually do resolve on their own, if they're simple and fluid-filled.  Birth control has not been proven to make them go away, but most think they help prevent cysts.

Ovarian cysts can cause pain, but "cramping, " is not a typical description.  There are many possible explanations for your symptoms.

i went to the emergency room they said i have a cyst on my ovaries, the doctors said get on birth control why i do i need to get on the pills i'm fat?

Hopefully: They referred you to the gyn on call for the er they should ahve expalined why to you, but if you ahve a simple fluid filled cyst , the bcpills can often shrink the cyst , so u need to see a gyn asap so he can treat you and you have to make sure the cyst goes away and doesn't get larger or rupture, and many of the newer pills you shoudln't gain weight, I use low dose ones in my pts lessor nowtgain.

i just found out i have a 4cm cyst on my right ovary. i have been on birth control for over a year. how can i form a new, large still on the pill?

Ovarian cysts: can occur without much help from external hormone pills.  Some experts think there is a mutational gene responsible, while others think there is a genetic connection.  The presence of higher levels of hormones may encourage the growth of these cysts, but unless you have PCOS, they are rather random.  With or without the pill.  Thanks for trusting in HealthTap.
