can you pull a muscle in your sleep. i had a dream i got kicked in the chest. when i woke up i was fine until i moved and now my chest muscles hurt from the sternum to ribs, arm, like as if i coughed too much. the area is tender to the touch?

You may have pulled a muscle and could have spasm
But you may have a lipoma, fibroma, cyst or other
soft tissue mass. 
Also an xray would be helpful to determine if there
was any bony masses

due to wrong sitting/sleeping posture i was getting right side ear jaw & shoulder pull/pain.i started going to gym and now my neck shoulders are paining. how do i differentiate between muscle strain and slip disc.does slip disc in neck need operation?

Neck problems: Medical history, physical examination and radiographic studies would be used to determine if there was a disc injury.  Not all intervertebral disc problems require surgery. You are trying to reduce something that would require complex assessment into something much simpler.

Motion testing: When your neck hurts, one way to assess the cause is to slowly move your neck in flexion, extension, side to side and then lowering each ear to your shoulder. With significant muscle involvement, you will feel the particualr area of the muscle resist your motion. If you, instead hear a gentle popping, that may signal a joint issue.

Yes: This is not uncommon to pull the intercostal muscles between the ribs.  Healing is like other muscle pulls but due to continual breathing the healing period may be longer due to continuous "tweaking' of the pulled muscle and if you don't breath deeply, pneumonias can theorectically develop.

Not likely.  : The fingers themselves don't have muscles inside them. They do have tendons, bones, ligaments, blood vessels and nerves.  The muscles that control the fingers are in the forearm and palm.  If you have soreness in the finger itself it could be do ligament injury, fracture, or tendon injury.

Yes: A charley horse is an involuntary muscle contraction which is prolonged. If the spasm is strong enough and starts abruptly enough, tendons can be damaged, stretched and possibly torn.

Back pain occurs.: It is very hard to strain the kidneys by moving and muscle strain is much more common.
