Can happen any time: You can actually get pregnant during any time of your cycle, but the chance is highest during/around time of ovulation (which, unfortunate, is very difficult to tell exactly when). The chance becomes less and less as you get older--being at 46 is less than at age 26. So, if you don't want pregnancy, protection is advised. Check a hpt when in doubt. Consult doc. Good luck.

Sure you can: Cycle timing has an incredibly high failure rate which is why couples start birth control. Six days prior to your period is a less likely time to get pregnant technically but not always reliably. If avoiding pregnancy is important to you please see your doctor to discuss more effective birth control methods.
