Only through contact: Hsv2 is usually contracted through sexual exposure with a person infected with hsv2. That is usually the only way to get hsv2.

Unrelated: Herpes doesn't cause symptoms like this. Completely unrelated and antiviral therapy won't help. Keep working with your doctor.

Possible: It is possible for you to acquire hsv-1 from your boyfriend, but genital outbreaks tend to be less severe than with hsv-2.  Have you had type-specific hsv antibody testing (a blood test) to see if you have already been exposed to hsv-1?
