my 3 year old has had a squamous papilloma for almost two years now inside his lower lip. how did he get this? no one in the family has hpv 6 or 11.

No certain answer.: Oral squamous papilloma are thought to be caused by HPV, most commonly  6 and 11, it is possible that other strains could also cause the lesion.  In addition, unless it has been biopsied, squamous papilloma could be confused with verrucas vulgaris which is also thought to be HPV induced, but with strains that often cause common warts on the skin but can occur on mucous membranes.

: HPV strains are selective for where they can infect. Genital strains can infect the genitals and in rare cases the oral cavity. They to not infect the lungs or circulate at random in the body like a flu virus. It is not transmitted in the air like the situation described.

Good question: Hpv as you seem to understand, appears to lead to increased oral cancers. If you were to have any symptoms of oral lesions get examined. In the meantime have you gotten and completed your hpv vaccine?

Unknown: I have not seen a statistic on oral hpv.  It is however on the increase along with anal hpv.  Part of the increase is due to more awareness of physicians to look for these problems.

Normal Flora: Hpv is normally found in the mouth, kept in balance with bacteria, fungi/yeast, and your immune system.  If there is an inbalance or change in your immune system, hpv can grow/increase and cause their damage.

Probably not: The current belief is that warts are caused by one of the many, many strains of HPV. That means a bump on a surface can be from a non-viral cause, but we would call it something else instead of a wart. One's primary care doctor can light up and magnify a bump to see what it might be. Maybe it's a wart, maybe it's something else. An in-person exam is needed because video isn't always clear enough.
