UTI's in kids: Children do not get urinary tract infections for most of the same reasons that adults do.  First and foremost, anatomical issues such as vesicoureteral reflux, posterior urethral valves and others issues must be investigated.  Otherwise, UTI's in children are often due to poor hygiene/wiping, masturbation, infrequent diaper or pull up changes, or chronic urethral irritation.

Septra, (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) norfloxacin: Trimethoprim/sulfa (septra (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) or bactrim), norfloxacin, and Nitrofurantoin (macrobid) given in low dose each night before bed are the usual antibiotics used for frequently recurrent uti's.  I do not prescribe Nitrofurantoin because of its potentially serious toxicities.

UTI: Pain is one of the symptoms used in classifying inflammation.  Infection is a major cause of inflammation.  This irritates nerve endings.

Sex: The most common reason you get bacteria into an otherwise sterile bladder, is thru intercourse. The vaginal canal is full of bacteria, and the pumping action of sex is what can push bacteria up into the bladder, hence the common term "honeymoon cystitis." but, certainly other ways are possible if the bacteria can migrate up the short urethra.
