: Not all pills can be cut in half. Check with your pharmacist. And more importantly if your dose is too high talk with your doctor about a lower dose.

Yes.: More and more medical literature suggests taking the 1/2 tablet dose. I suggest taking your medicine 1 hour before bedtime.

Lunesta (eszopiclone): The manufacturer does not recommend breaking the tablet in half. A broken tablet has a horrible metallic taste.

Above FDA limit: The FDA limit per day is 3mg, and they are actually now recommending less than that.

Lunesta: 4 mg is the maximum dose. If that doesn't work, taking another mg won't help.

: Lunesta appears to be one of the more effective sleep agents, and sudden cessation would likely cause insomnia.  Taper off slowly, working closely with your doctor.  Focus on  sleep hygiene approaches.

Increased sleepiness: Taking a total of 5mg of Lunesta is likely to increase the side effects of the medication without improving your sleep.  You are more likely to have the impulsivity, agitation, bizarre behavior, hallucinations, sense of being outside of yourself, depression, and even suicidal thoughts.  Since you have already slept it off, it is unlikely there will be further effects.
